“Keen to be green: Sustainability in scene design & decorative construction - status quo & innovations”

Tue, May 7th, 2024, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., via Zoom - registrations are now possible!

Time for a recap! The German Film Commissions' sustainable online networking event “Keen to be green” started in 2020 with the production design trade and the mission to make film productions “greener”. Four years later, on Tuesday, May 7th, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., we will take stock together with the Association of Scene Design & Costume Design e.V. (VSK) at “Keen to be green: Sustainability in production design & decorative construction - status quo & innovations”.

Where did we start, what political and economic developments were there and what is the current sustainable status quo in the scene? What challenges do creatives face in terms of sustainability in communication, time and budget pressure? And how can change be supported?

Our experts report from practice with a focus on wood alternatives and recycling cycles. Which innovations have already proven themselves? How important is the resource wood as a CO2 store and how can recycling cycles be established in the long term - especially with regard to the upcoming requirements of the “Ecological Standards” for production design that are relevant to film funding.

We look forward to the following guests:

  • John Baker, Managing Director SpeedSet
  • Dr. Hannes Böttcher, Senior Researcher ÖKO-Institut e.V.
  • Samuel Jaeger, film architect / Baudekolon Design Atelier
  • Matthias Müsse, production designer & VSK board member
  • Chris Gilmour, Design Director at Vectar Sets
  • Götz Harmel, production designer “Toni’s World”
  • Olivier Meidinger, production designer & VSK board member
  • David Peichl, initiator of “Setbakers” & outside props manager
Moderation: Philip Gassmann, Green Filming & TV expert

Participation is free of charge. Registration is required. The panel will take place in German.

KEEN TO BE GREEN" - THE GERMAN FILM COMMISSIONS' SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE

"Keen to be green"- the nationwide sustainability initiative of the German Film Commissions continues to enjoy a great response: so far, more than 3000 filmmakers from all trades have participated in the online events on "green filming". Due to the unbroken demand and the current relevance in view of new legal regulations, the successful series with Green Film and TV expert Philip Gassmann was continued in 2023 and events are being planned for 2024.

Back in May 2020, the nationwide initiative "Keen to be green" was launched by the German Film Commissions to provide individual training to film and media professionals in the field of sustainable work processes and to offer all interested parties the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in green filming.

Since then, there have been around 30 online events with practical green examples and interesting guests. Since 2021, all "Keen to be green" panels have been available on YouTube. The last panels in 2023 focused on the new nationwide uniform "Ecological standards for German cinema TV and online VoD productions" and highlighted the topic of "How to produce green across borders" with regard to co-productions.

Almost all federal associations in the film and TV industry have now been won over as partners of "Keen to be green". Among them are: the Association of Professional Groups for Production Design & Costume Design (VSK), the Federal Association for Film and Television Production (BvP), the Federal Association for Production Management (b:hp), the Federal Association for Camera (BVK), the Federal Association for Lighting & Camera Stage (BVB), the Association of Agencies for Film, Television and Theater e.V. (VdA), the Association of Film and Television Actors (BFFS), the Federal Association of Directors (BVR), the Association of German Screenwriters e.V. (VDD) and the Federal Association of Green Consultants (GCD).

The initiative is supported by the German Film Academy, the Producers Alliance, the Producers Association e.V., the Association of German Commercial Film Producers, the German Academy for Television and Changemakers.film.

With the "Keen to be green" initiative of their Film Commissions, the regional German film funding agencies of the German states - FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, HessenFilm und Medien, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, MFG BadenWürttemberg, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, Filmförderung Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and nordmedia - Film- und Mediengesellschaft Niedersachsen/Bremen - want to support the industry in this necessary further education.
